Trinity Presbyterian Church of Herndon is a community of faith striving to equip disciples of Christ to serve God in the power of the Holy Spirit. Together, we seek to GATHER, GROW, and GET INVOLVED in the name of Jesus.

Ash Wednesday Service

Ash Wednesday service will be held on February 22nd in the sanctuary at 7:30 pm. The pastors will mark the foreheads of those wishing to participate with the sign of the cross using ashes from palms used during the Palm Sunday service last year.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs 46 days before Easter.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a period of reflection, sacrifice, and repentance for all Christians. In ancient times, dusting oneself with ashes was a way of expressing sorrow for one's sins and faults.

Mozart Requiem

Requiem by W.A. Morzart will be performed at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 651 Dranesville Rd, Herndon, VA on Saturday evening, March 3rd, at 7:00 p.m.  This free concert features members of choirs from:

  • St. Timothy’s Episcopal, and
  • Trinity Presbyterian.

Please come and be inspired by music that brings musicians and listeners of all faiths together.

ABOUT THE REQUIEM (from Wikipedia)

The Requiem Mass in D minor (K. 626) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was composed in Vienna in 1791 and left unfinished at the composer's death.  A completion by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who had anonymously commissioned the piece for a requiem Mass to commemorate the February 14 anniversary of his wife's death.

It is one of the most enigmatic pieces of music ever composed, mostly because of the myths and controversies surrounding it, especially around how much of the piece was completed by Mozart before his death.  The autograph manuscript shows the finished and orchestrated Introit in Mozart's hand, as well as detailed drafts of the Kyrie and the sequence Dies Irae as far as the first nine bars of Lacrimosa, and the Offertory.  It cannot be shown to what extent Süssmayr may have depended on now lost "scraps of paper" for the remainder; he later claimed the Sanctus and Agnus Dei as his own.  Walsegg probably intended to pass the Requiem off as his own composition, as he is known to have done with other works.  This plan was frustrated by a public benefit performance for Mozart's widow, Constanze.  A modern contribution to the mythology is Peter Shaffer's 1979 play Amadeus, in which the mysterious messenger with the commission is the masked Antonio Salieri who intends to claim authorship for himself.

Silent Auction

The TRINITY SILENT AUCTION in support of Trinity’s Youth summer mission trips is back!  Last year, we were able to raise over $2,500 as a result of the donation of and bidding on the wonderful baskets and items donated by our congregation!  Whether you are an individual who can donate an item, service, or basket, or part of a church group or committee that would like to combine efforts and create a theme basket, we need your help!  Donations can be large or small — we welcome and need all types to make the auction a success!  Last year, the whole event was great fun and will, once again, take place during the Spaghetti Lunch from 12–1:30 p.m. on March 11.  Contact Kathy Joyner at kjoyner121@yahoo.com by March 4 to arrange a donation or for more information.

Community Service Volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the following activities:

1)  LUNCH FOR THE SOUL: Trinity is responsible for set-up, food preparation, serving, and clean-up the first two Wednesdays of each month. Volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs, both prior to and during the event.  Please contact Esther Johnson or call her at 703-435-3728 if you can help out.

2) LINK FOOD PACKERSLINK, the church-sponsored food pantry, is looking for volunteers to pack the food deliveries for clients.  It only takes about an hour at a time determined by the packer.  We deliver Tuesday-Saturday every week of the year to about three families per day.  This is a great job for families, groups or individuals.  We send an e-mail at the beginning of each month to see which day(s) volunteers are available and then put the schedule together.  Packing is done at the LINK pantry near Herndon High School.  If you would like more information or to volunteer to be a LINK Packer, please email Kathy Proctor or call 703-508-8296.

3) LINK PANTRY LIST.  LINK provides for emergency needs in the Herndon, Sterling and Ashburn area.  The following items are needed: diapers, paper towels, toilet paper, boxed cake/brownie mix, packaged potatoes, canned baked beans, canned pork and beans, Hamburger Helper, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly.  Thank you for your generosity.  If you wish to make a donation, drop a check in the offering plate made payable to Trinity PC and marked with “LINK Donation” in the memo line.

4) HELP OUT AT "THE CLOSET".  The Closet is always in need of donations and helpers.

  • We need people to label clothes to be brought out to the floor (no special talents needed ).
  • We need donations of clean and gently used clothing and jewelry.
  • We need volunteers to staff the sales floor between the hours of 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Volunteers would need to man the jewelry counter and the dressing room; wrap purchases and maintain an orderly floor.
If you can help the Closet in any way, please let Ellen Berkman or Virginia Clarity know.  Thank you for all you do to help the needy in the Herndon area.

Hearing Assistance

Trinity provides a hearing assistance system in our sancturary.  The hearing loop system eliminates extraneous noise or blurring of the sound with distance from the sound source.  It's as if you are in a sound-proof room and the speaker is directly in front of you.  After experiencing the capability, a member of the congregation remarked, "Wow, what a difference!  I didn't know what I was missing all these years."

The system is called an "induction loop" or "hearing loop" and, when coupled with a "T-coil" (telecoil)-enabled hearing aid or T-coil enabled cochlear implant, provides a greatly-enhanced listening experience.  Anyone with some hearing loss but no hearing aid also can benefit from the system using a small receiver device and headphones or ear-buds.

The system is operational within the first nine rows in the sanctuary on the side where the piano and organ are located.  Trinity has 3 receiver and headphone systems available for anyone who would like to experience this capability.  Please contact one of the pastors or ushers prior to a worship service.

In its 2009/2010 reviews of hearing aid models, the Hearing Review Products reported that 126 of 183 (69%) hearing aid models, including all 38 in-the-ear models and 29 of 30 conventional behind-the-ear models, come with T-coils.   However, the T-coil capability embedded in many hearing aids has never been activated because the technology is not widespread in the U.S.  Many hearing aids also offer a setting for a simultaneous mic and T-coil (MT) setup.  In settings where one wishes both inputs, the MT setting is useful.  If you have a hearing aid and want to take advantage of this capability, contact your hearing aid provider to determine if your hearing aid has this capability, and if so, ask that it be activated.  Many T-coil hearing aids permit you to activate or turn off the capability depending upon the situation, so check to see if your hearing aid has such a switch.

Additional information can be obtained from www.hearingloop.org.  Click here for an informative article on how some churches are "putting hearing-impaired in the loop".

QR Code

If you’re not yet familiar with Quick Response (QR) codes, they’re similar to the barcodes used by retailers to track inventory and price products at the point of sale.  You see them more and more frequently in newspaper or magazine advertisements.

Trinity now has a QR code that, when scanned with a web-enabled camera phone, will automatically take you to the Trinity Web site.  If your phone does not already have a QR application, you should be able to download it from you service provider.  The code is available on a flyer on the table across from the main entry doors or you can experiment with the Trinity QR code shown below.  In the future, Trinity may provide QR codes for a number of applications such as event registration or online giving.  Try it out!

YouTube Videos

Trinity currently has three (3) videos on YouTube!  Two of them showcase our relationship with LINK and the third one highlights our Lunch for the Soul mission.  To see these videos, please look at the sidebar on the LINK and Lunch for the Soul web page.
