LINK

LINK is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit emergency food bank for the Herndon, Ashburn, and Sterling communities.  It supplies food to approximately 50-60 eligible families monthly as well as serving hundreds of families and individuals during its annual Christmas and Thanksgiving food basket program.  Over a dozen churches combine efforts to make these services possible.

Volunteers are needed throughout the year to sort, pack, and deliver food to families, screen applicants, and coordinate the food bank’s activities.

Trinity is one of two churches that host the Thanksgiving and Christmas food basket program at its facilities the week prior to these two holidays. Numerous volunteers are needed to sort and stack food, serve as interpreters, register families, guide families through the food selection process, load food into cars, pack and deliver food to people that are unable to get to the church, and help clean up. Food donations as well as tax deductible financial donations are always welcomed.

Volunteer from Home - Can you imagine a volunteer job where you rarely have to leave your own home? LINK has the perfect position for you! We are looking for volunteers to answer phones just 3 times during the year for two weeks at a time. Volunteers call in remotely and retrieve messages left by LINK clients who need emergency food assistance, and then contact those clients and find out their food needs. You will schedule the dates for food deliveries and then send an email to the Delivery Coordinator and the Packing Coordinator each day that deliveries are scheduled. We are also looking for bilingual (Spanish) volunteers. The timeframe would be February/June/October. This is a great way to get involved in an organization that benefits clients in our communities and know that you are helping make a difference in someone’s life!

Groups needed--Food collection drives, as well as coat and toy drives of new and gently used items are very much needed for the holiday programs. Opportunities are available for youth including those who want to complete community service hours.

Our community food pantry, now celebrating over 40 years of service, has a new website (http://www.linkagainsthunger.org) and new logo (see above) thanks to volunteers from Leadership Fairfax.

LINK has partnered with the Capital Area Food Bank and sponsors a Mobile Food Pantry the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 3-6 PM in the Christ the Redeemer Church parking lot (46833 Harry Byrd Hwy., Sterling).  Families will receive FREE food, which will vary each month depending on availability and season, but typically include fresh vegetables and fruit, bread, and specialty items. There are no restrictions such as income, place of residence, etc., for those picking up food.

Clients will bring their own shopping bags or containers.  There is generally enough food to serve 100 or more families.  If you are aware of anyone who could benefit from this service, please let them know.
